When a progressive northwest couple asked Castanes Architects to design an apartment building which featured their top floor living unit with a roof garden; the answer was “yes”!!!! Though the site could accommodate many apartments, the design was based on “phasing” the construction for the apartments over a period of time. The first phase would include two upper floors for the Owner’s unit and a lower floor for the apartments and workshop. The roof garden above the Owner’s unit, which has terrific views towards Lake Union and the city, has offered many wonderful times with friends and family. With proper solar orientation, the radiant heating system at the Owner’s unit has yet to be turned on because the southern exposure has supplied more than enough energy for the unit to stay warm.
