Castanes Architects PS is working with internationally renowned sculptor Joseph McDonnell on his latest art installation.

The piece named “Blocks of Knowledge”, is designed for the courtyard at Lemieux Library of Seattle University.

You know winter is near when you’re craving a nice pizza-pie dressed in a mild tomato sauce, topped with melted fresh mozzarella and garnished with fresh basil leaves.
Tutta Bella Westlake is one of two restaurants Castanes Architects PS designed for Joe Fugere. It’s a spot that has already become a landmark in the very trendy Southlake Union neighborhood.

Not too long ago we were invited to Tutta Bella Westlake for a private pizza making class. We learned how to be gentle with the dough, and careful with the 800°F oven.
We also realized what a real artist the Pizzaiolo is; as for the pizza to come out right, every step has to be perfected.

Considering we began design discussions for this project back in September of 2006, it is amazing how much love and hard work goes into realizing a dream!

We have some exciting news to share!

Last week Thursday the New York Times published an article on “Lighthouse”, the residence atop Smith Tower. This one of a kind penthouse is a past remodel by Castanes Architects within the pinnacle of this landmark building.

The owner asked for a seating arrangement at the NE corner of the terrace and she said to Jim “Don’t give me any hints! I want to be completely surprised when it’s finished! Design anything you like, and we’ll call it Jim’s Corner!” What a wonderful, but challenging offer! a complete freedom, yet you still want it to be a great surprise!

Here in the office, we put our heads together, sorted through several concepts, forms, materials, furniture… Built little models and tried to present our ideas to the owner, but no! she really wanted a surprise.

We decided on a fire-table that is shaped so the chairs around it will be arranged to capture the views of the lake. We designed the base with folding sheets of stainless steel. We picked a stone that is naturally dense with metals, so that when parties spill to the top of the fire-table it will endure people dancing on it! And to contrast it all, we used delicate chairs with white mesh.

The stone was delivered last week. Considering it’s not such a large piece, I was amazed that it actually took 7 men to lift it to it’s place. It was a beautiful sunny day, with long shadows and bright reflections over the stone.
