Yesterday, we received the STEREOLITHOGRAPHY (SLA) Model of a downtown penthouse we’ve been working on. And it is so BEAUTIFUL!
The SLA Process:
First we created a 3D computer model of the penthouse. We divided the model into 3 major components: Main floor, Mezzanine and the Roof. We designed all the components to interlock so that the model can be viewed as a whole or in layers. We created recessed and raised surfaces to express elements such as sinks, shelves, and kitchen cabinetry. Then we sent the file to East Coast.
They ran the model through their machines… The process is actually very interesting:The model starts as a liquid photopolymer inside something like a fishtank. The SLA starts tracing the model in layers, by hardening the polymer with laser beams. As each layer hardens the laser beams move down until the entire model is traced. It took about 5 days to complete our model!!
